TSA & Piercings or Avoid TSA Lines after Mardi Gras at all Costs

In the news recently was news about a woman trying to go through the TSA line in Lubbock Texas. When her nipple piercings set off the metal detector, TSA sprang into action.

The woman offered to show her piercings to a female agent to quickly satisfy the alert. That however was not sufficient for our trusty government workers. Instead, they required her to remove the piercings with a pliers so they could insure that she was indeed safe.

The TSA Response to the article states that “procedures were followed” although they may need updating. If those are the procedures we are mandating, then I’d like to propose that rather the Department of Homeland Security, we create the Department of Common Sense and move the TSA under that department.

Do I understand the need for increased airport security? Yes. Unfortunatly the majority of procedures I’ve seen placed into effect are designed to look good rather than be effective. Just the fact that there is little to no commonality from checkpoint to checkpoint (hold on to your boarding pass, put your bording pass away, take off your shoes, don’t take off your shoes) is interesting in itself.

From the perspective of fairness, I’ve had some very good TSA agents…they run fast, efficient lines and if something is pulled, they drill right in on the suspect items. To them I take off my hat. As for Lubbock, I think I’ll drive.
