According to this article, credit card data was stolen from customers of the Magnolia Cafe during SXSW. The interesting aspect of this isn’t that the credit card data was taken, but the fact that it was receipts taken. Those receipts contained the full 16-digit card numbers which is a clear violation of PCI rules. Magnolia Cafe would qualify as a Tier 4 merchant under Visa’s rules, which is the hardest to police. While the thefts from this group are usually small in dollar (unless it was your information of course), but large in quantity. Tier 4 merchants represent by far the largest threat area according to Visa.
More to come on PCI in coming months. A good rule though is check the receipts carefully and make sure your card data is not fully displayed.
