The biggest challengeI see in UX is how to avoid complexity. At technologists the tendency is to implement everything and avoid decisions by making more and more options. Actually getting inside the user’s head and understanding how to meet their needs in a simple and elegant way is hard. See the engineer run! Seriously, creating simple elegance is part science, part art, and desperately needed in today’s world.

This series of screenshots shows Apple’s questionably named HTML5 and web standards showcase pages displayed on a Newton MessagePad 2100.

The Newton was running Eckhart Köppen’s lightweight, text-only Courier web browser, as well as Steve Weyer’s more capableNewt’s Cape browser.

Keep in mind that both browsers were developed prior to the existence of HTML5. While neither piece of software supports the advanced interaction or layout effects afforded by JavaScript and CSS3, the clean HTML5 markup is completely accessible.

This is an excellent article by a fellow iPad user after two months. She brings some excellent points as well as a nice wish list.

She and I both agree in the desire for alternate entry. In her case Swype, in my case Version 1 Graffiti from the palm would be sweet for taking notes without looking.

A while back I wrote about my initial impressions. I have now been using it for a couple of months and will publish my new thoughts this weekend.
